4 Perfect Christmas Movies for Writers

December 4, 2019

Keeping it very short for you guys this time, for the sake of the hustle and bustle. The holidays get so busy that it's easy to lose track of time or to make any time for the things we should be doing—like writing. More so than any other time of year, I have to actively push myself to work on my pieces. In between pushing myself, I like to watch cozy Christmas movies that serve as both inspiration and as holiday treats. Here are my 4 go-to movies that give me all the yummy Christmas feels year after year.

This film hits most of my holiday movie tick list items: it's based on a classic novel, one of the lead characters is a writer, it's a period drama, and it has strong female characters. A remake comes out this Christmas. I'm not a huge fan of remakes, but I am open to this one because of actors Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, and Laura Dern; there is hope that they won't ruin it.

Set in two of my favorite places: LA and England. If that's not enough to hook you, how about another lead-actress-writer? Strong female characters? It seems all of my movies have these trends in common. Or, if you just love romcoms, this is a good one!

She doesn't play a writer, but she does play a dreamer. In this film, Sandra Bullock's character tires of feeling invisible. She yearns to leave her lonely life behind and take the trip of her dreams to Florence, Italy. Before she can venture anywhere, fate has a plan for her.

This is my number one favorite holiday

movie! I could, and do, watch this movie a couple dozen times throughout the Christmas season. Ticking multiple boxes again, this movie gets me into the Christmas spirit every time. London, amazing cast (love me some Hugh, Colin, and Liam), Colin Firth plays a novelist, intertwined stories! If you've never watched, do it! Just be careful of the rated R version—not okay for kids. If you're catching the version on ABC FreeForm, then you're okay.

Enjoy the holiday season, but don't forget to work. Don't lose sight of your dreams and goals. At the same time, forgive yourself a little if you do. Especially if it's for the sake of watching one of these films!

I'm always on the hunt for more Xmas movies, especially if they are about writers, so please comment with your favorite.
